This writing prompt is actually inspired by a picture I had seen circulating Facebook several times of deer eating a lion, presumably hunted down by the deer. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, third definition of “phase”: the point or stage in a period of uniform circular motion, harmonic motion, or the periodic changes of any magnitude varying according to a simple harmonic law to which the rotation, oscillation, or variation has advanced from its standard position or assumed instant of starting. Photo by Matthew Kerslake on Unsplash As with all things, where there is a beginning and there is an ending. There is no telling if this story is about the beginning or the ending. That is a matter of perspective. It is, however, a story about the king of all.
Long ago, the world was ruled by a powerful king. None can remember who this king was, no stories remain. As in the way of all things, a new king rose, the lion became king of all, feared by all. During this time, the world changed. It expanded and contracted, it grew bountiful and barren, it became what it is. Fear destroyed, the hunters became greedy, and the hunted learned. Most expected man to destroy the king, to become the king of all. Man thought this time had already come to pass. Lying in wait, the hunted evolved, learned, and kept a great secret. Time passed, and the king of all grew wary, waiting for man to make a move. While hunting in the woods, the lion spotted a small herd of deer. Sensing no danger, the king crouched and crept, silently moving into position, thirsty for the hunt. Pouncing upon the weakest of the deer, the lion was too excited to sense the danger. The former king died quickly, not knowing what went wrong. The hunted becoming powerful, the hunted becoming guardians of the weak, the hunted becoming the king of all. Feasting upon the lion’s flesh, a new king rose. The lion, no longer special, was merely another lion, thus ending the phase of a lion and beginning the phase of the Hunted.
